Australia Day

Tuesday 26 Jan 2010
Australia Day (previously known as Anniversary Day, Foundation Day and ANA Day), and also referred to as Invasion Day by several groups within Australian society, is the official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, the day commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788, the hoisting of the British flag there, and the proclamation of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of Australia.

Australia Day is an official public holiday in every state and territory of Australia, and is marked by the Order of Australia and Australian of the Year awards, along with an address from the Prime Minister.

Although it was not known as Australia Day until over a century later, records of celebrations on 26 January date back to 1808, with Governor Lachlan Macquarie having held the first official celebration of the formation of New South Wales in 1818. In 2004, an estimated 7.5 million people attended Australia Day celebrations and functions across the country.

Australia Day is seen as controversial by some Australians, who see it as a celebration of the destruction of Indigenous culture by British colonialism. There have been significant protests from and on behalf of the Indigenous Australian community, including, since 1988, "Invasion Day" protests. In light of these concerns, proposals to change the date of Australia Day have been made. As the date also marks the anniversary of the Rum Rebellion in 1808, Australia Day may be viewed as a commemoration of the only military coup in Australian history. This last view parallels a sort of Independence Day.

Sung's Kitchen

Monday 25 Jan 2010
Lin took us to a surprising gem of a Chinese restaurant, tucked away in Franklin St.
The undisputed favourite dish of the evening was the Stewed Pork Knuckle with Dates. The pork knuckle was tender, but a bit dry on the inside, partly because the meat is lean, but probably also due to the fact that it had been deep-fried to puff up the skin such that it soaks up the stewing sauce. Raymond, Peter and I snapped up most of the silky skin, while the girls were content with the lean pork. The sauce was quite amazing. It was sticky, sweet and fragrant with the three types of Chinese dates - red, black and honey dates.
You can't go wrong with a sweet and sour deep-fried fish and the Chrysanthemum Fish didn't disappoint. The rock ling fillet was scored with a diamond pattern such that, when deep-fried, it opens up into a flower. Obviously though, you need to keep the fish skin intact to contract the base. I suspect that the skin was removed, which mean that the flower didn't "bloom" as fully.

Australian Open

Saturday 23 Jan 2010
The Australian Open is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments held each year. The tournament is held in January at Melbourne Park. The tournament was held for the first time in 1905 and was contested on grass until 1987. Since 1988, the tournament has been held on hard courts at Melbourne Park. Mats Wilander is the only male player to have won the tournament on both grass and hard courts.

Like all other Grand Slam tournaments, there are men's and women's singles competitions; men's, women's, and mixed doubles; and junior's and master's competitions.

The two main courts used in the tournament are Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena and feature retractable roofs, which can be shut in case of rain or extreme heat. The Australian Open and Wimbledon are the only Slams with indoor play.

Held in the middle of the Australian summer, the Australian Open is famous for extremely hot days. An extreme-heat policy is put into play when temperatures (and humidity) reach dangerous levels.

The Australian Open typically has very high attendance, with the 2009 Australian Open achieving the highest ever single-day day/night attendance record for any Grand Slam tournament of 66,018. The event is worth around £38 million ($A68 million) to the Australian economy.

In 2008, the Rebound Ace surface, which had been in place for the past 20 years at Melbourne Park, was replaced by a cushioned, medium-paced, acrylic surface known as Plexicushion Prestige. The main benefits of the new surface are better consistency and less retention of heat (because of a thinner top layer). This change was accompanied by changes in the surfaces of all lead-up tournaments to the Australian Open. The change was controversial because of the new surface's similarity to DecoTurf, the surface used by the US Open.

100 years of Flinders Street Station

Friday 22 Jan 2010
Flinders Street Station was officially opened on Saturday 22 January 1910. This event took place in what is now known as the ballroom situated at the western end of the building on the third floor. The entire third floor, in fact, was added to the design to house the newly formed Railways Institute or VRI. The VRI facilities included several classrooms, a gymnasium, billiard room with five full size tables, borrowing library, reference library, reading room, games room and a lecture hall which later became used as a ballroom.

The design for the ‘central suburban rail terminus' resulted from a competition held in 1899 by the railways department after years of disagreement between the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Railways and the Railway Commissioners. The criteria for the station was clearly defined and included the stipulation for three entrances, a long façade of a specified width running along Flinders Street and a concourse with ramps along Swanston Street. Controversy surrounded the awarding of the first prize of 500 pounds to two railway employees, James Fawcett and HJP? Ashworth, as it was claimed that, amongst other anomalies, an extension of time had been given to the railways without informing the other entrants.

Excavation of the site began in 1901 and was done without any mechanisation. In 1903, when the Commissioners decided to form the VRI and create a third floor to house the Institute, construction was well under way. In 1905 the contract to build the actual station was awarded to a Williamstown builder, Peter Rodger. Rodger's work was delayed right from the beginning by changes and disputes as to the construction and the materials to be used. Significant cutbacks were made and the roof which was to cover the platforms was removed. Rodger's progress was hampered by many factors beyond his control and he was eventually dismissed on the grounds that insufficient progress had been made. The VR Way and Works Department finished the station but Rodger, through a Royal Commission, was compensated for his loses.

In the 1970s, the station was severely under threat of being demolished and the National Trust was able to enact a Heritage Order to save it. Unfortunately, this did not extend to the original concourse along Swanston Street which was demolished in the 1980s in an action by the railways department that evoked a lot of controversy. The concourse has been changed several times since then and, apart from the original verandahs and iron posts on the street side, nothing remains of the original structure.

Today half of the building remains unoccupied and has not had any maintenance done for many decades. The VRI decided to move out of the third floor in the 1980s due to declining membership and the withdrawal of financial assistance from the railways department. This added to the general decline of the building but was by no means the cause of it.

Thinking in the silent night

Sunday 17 Jan 2010
Silent night, thinking rising with the white moonlight, sitting in front of the window, and found something to write.Moonlight standing on my face, trees and flowers dancing in the yard, what a beautiful night! But I don’t know why, why my soul getting so noisy and can’t be calmed. Maybe something has stayed in my heart for so long time, and seems it is time for me to show up in this silent night.
Something happened and can’t be forgot, because it covering beautiful memory and pain, that is why I am always think about the past and can’t pull myself out. I knew clearly that past already passed and never come back, just don’t know why I am still can’t let it be?
I have asked myself thousand times about such questions, I don’t know why I am so clinging, maybe I am just the guy who thinking too much about what I have paid, and thinking too much about what I have got, am I an asocial man?
Maybe this is my real problem, we always said “no pay no gain”, but always forget another saying, “paying is always no equal to the gain”, sometimes paying is tremendous but gain is slight. But when you decided to pay that means there must be something or someone is deserved to your pay, right? So if finally you can’t get the expected wishes, don’t be disappointed, life is fair and it will compensate you from another aspect. For example, elementary you have learned the experience from what you done and know how to do in future, right?

Squires Loft

Saturday 16 Jan 2010
Life's short. My aim is to taste every delicious all over the world. My boyfriend often call me miss piggy.Well.......
The first Squires Loft was opened in 1992 in Church Street Brighton. Our reputation for consistently delivering great steaks and unique flavours led us to a larger store in South Yarra where we are still located today.

The success of the Squires Loft formula and demand for Squires Loft branded products led to substantial interest from staff and customers who wanted to duplicate the business. This has resulted in 8 steakhouse restaurants operating, four under the Squires Loft banner.

These steakhouses are located around Melbourne, Country Victoria, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Further steakhouses are in the pipeline and there is significant interest, which we believe should lead to more Squires Loft steakhouses opening.

As a result of this demand and significant recognition of the Squires Loft name, The Squires Loft Steakhouse Development Group (SLSDG) has embraced a non traditional franchise model so as to enable the expansion of the brand and for all stores/venues to be branded as a Squires Loft steakhouse.

LOMO Camera

Thursday 14 Jan 2010
I bought a lomo camera. It looks like a toy but great to use.It was established as a French - Russian limited company to produce lenses and cameras. It manufactured gun sights during World War I. In 1919, it was nationalised. In the ensuing years, the state optical industries were reorganised several times. In 1921, the factory was named the Factory of State Optics, G.O.Z. In 1925, camera production was resumed, and several lens designs tested between 1925 and 1929. In 1928, the factory was ordered to manufacture a 9x12 camera, known as the FOTOKOR.

Further reorganisations of the soviet optical factories in several stages finally resulted in that the factory at Leningrad became GOMZ, the Russian Optical and Mechanical Factory.

In the transition period 1932 to 1935 a copy of the Leica camera was developed, the VOOMP I. It was followed by the VOOMP II or the "Pioneer" that was manufactured in small numbers. Simultaneously designers began the development of a single-lens reflex camera for 35mm cine film, possibly inspired by similar work in Germany, especially at Zeiss Ikon in Dresden, since the lens mount is quite similar to that of the Contax cameras of the time. Zeiss themselves were not allowed to pursue their ideas, due to the German armament. The new camera, called the "Sport", was introduced at about the same time as the Ihagee Kine Exakta in 1936.

Today LOMO makes military optics, scientific research instruments, criminological microscopes, medical equipment, and a range of consumer products. It produced the first Russian camera in 1930.

Smile is a kind of cultivation.

Wednesday 13 Jan 2010
Life do not own us anything, so it is unnecessary for us to keep sad. We should thanks the life because at lease it gave our life and the room of living.
Smile is a kind of attitude to life, and will not have any relationship with poverty, wealthy and status. A rich man will be sad but a poor man will be happy; a handicapped will be optimistic but a healthy man will be pessimistic.
Normaly our mood will be influenced by the entironment. But it is helpless for us to change the entironment if we keep sad. But if we live with smile and we will be genial with the people around us and we will get more changes to to live a better life.
We can only feel the sunshine of our life unless our heart with sunshine. How come we make a better life if our heart fill of sadness? Life is a mirror and we can’t hide behind it, it will follow our cry and smile.

An affecting story

Monday 11 Jan 2010
"never to accept pay for a kindness"
One day, a poor boy who was trying to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door found that he only had one dime left. He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house.
However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?"
"You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness." He said, "Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart." As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the human race. He was about to give up and quit before this point.
The supreme happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved .(Victor Hugo , French novelist )
Years later the young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where specialists can be called in to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly, now famous was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.
Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room and determined to do his best to save her life. From that day on, he gave special attention to her case.
After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to her room. She was afraid to open it because she was positive that it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally she looked, and the note on the side of the bill caught her attention. She read these words...
"Paid in full with a glass of milk."

(Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly

Tears of joy flooded her eyes as she prayed silently: "Thank You, God. Your love has spread through human hearts and hands."

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Thursday 7 Jan 2010
Our housemates went to watch the A Midsummer Night's Dream tonight.
Shakespeare Under The Stars returns to the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne with Glenn Elston's production of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
"The course of true love never did run smooth!" (but it can be very funny!) Especially as the sun is setting over the Royal Botanic Gardens this summer and you’re sitting Under The Stars, the picnic hamper is a lot lighter and the fairies are about to come out to play mayhem with the innocent lovers and the well meaning fools in the madcap world of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

AVATAR

Wednesday 6 Jan 2010
Kathy and i went to watch AVATAR in Highpoint tonight. The cinema is full of people. I saw the trailer twice but couldn't well understand. Avatar is a 2009 American science fiction epic film written and directed by James Cameron and starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez and Stephen Lang. The film is set in the year 2154 on Pandora, a moon in the Alpha Centauri star system. Humans are engaged in mining Pandora's reserves of a precious mineral, called unobtanium, while the Na'vi—a race of indigenous humanoids—resist the colonists' expansion, which threatens the continued existence of the Na'vi and the Pandoran ecosystem. The film's title refers to the genetically engineered Na'vi bodies used by a few of the film's human characters to interact with the Na'vi.

Happy New Year

My boyfriend is so cute. He said it's new year now, let's earn some money. Then he bring me to Sovereign Hill.
Before we go to Sovereign Hill i must first talk about Ballarat. Ballarat is 112 km away from Melbourne, is Australia's best-known ancient city of gold. 1851, Australia south of the continent for the first time gold was discovered, setting off a gold rush all over the world, attracted participants from Europe, the Americas and Asia, treasure hunters who have come here to realize their dreams of gold, only mainland China such as Guangdong and Fujian coastal areas to come to more than 40,000 laborers. By the early 20th century, where the gold had been dug extinguished, and shut down the size of the main gold mine, as long as 50 years have become the gold wave of history. Australian Government to commemorate this period of history, in the seventies to build an air museum gold Sovereign Hill, and re-create the town of Ballarat was the flavor, when in 1851, and the scene.

Merry Christmas

Christmas is a Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. No one knows the exact date of Christ's birth, but most Christians observe Christmas on December 25. On this day, many go to church, where they take part in special religious services. During the Christmas season, they also exchange gifts and decorate their homes with holly, mistletoe, and Christmas trees. The word Christmas comes from Cristes maesse, an early English phrase that means Mass of Christ. The story of Christmas comes chiefly from the Gospels of Saint Luke and Saint Matthew in the New Testament.
On Boxing Day i bought lot of things. My boyfriend said you were a shopaholic.

Fitness First

Saturday 19 Dec 2009
My housemate said "you'd better have some workout" yesterday. So I went to University of Melbourne's GYM to do some exercise. It's becoming a trend for modern people to work out in the gym. We all warm up before doing some exercises. After a warm-up of ten minutes, we started jogging. When I was stopped the treadmill, I felt relief. Oh my god, i am so tired.I think I have to take an aerobics class now. Now I can do 100 sit-ups in a row. Don't get jealous. You will do it someday.

The Storm Warriors

Friday 18 Dec,2009
The Storm Warriors is a 2009 Hong Kong martial arts/wuxia film, produced and directed by the Pang brothers. It is the second live-action film adaptation of screenwriter Ma Wing-Shing's manhua Fung Wan, following the 1998 film The Storm Riders. The Storm Warriors is based on Fung Wan′s popular Japanese invasion story arc The Death Battle. Ekin Cheng and Aaron Kwok respectively reprise their roles as Wind and Cloud, who this time find themselves up against Lord Godless (Simon Yam), a ruthless Japanese warlord bent on invading China. The film is a co-production between Universe Entertainment and Sil-Metropole Organisation.
A sequel to The Storm Riders was first announced in March 2008 after Universe gained rights to the Fung Wan franchise from former film distributor Golden Harvest. The Pangs aimed on creating a big-budgeted film involving visual effects and stated that The Storm Warriors would not be a direct sequel to its 1998 predecessor. Principal photography for The Storm Warriors began in April 2008 and ended in July; filming took place in three studios located in Bangkok, Thailand. The film is notable for being the first Chinese language film shot in bluescreen. During post-production, effects artists worked on scenes involving computer-generated imagery, focusing on the film's setting and backgrounds.
